EDITORS COMMENTS
November 10, 1793: The Goddess of Reason Takes Residence in Notre Dame During the French Revolution, the radical faction known as the Montagnards sought to purge the vestiges of the old regime from French society. On this day in history, the Convention, the revolutionary legislative body, decreed that the hallowed halls of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris be transformed into a Temple de la Raison (Temple of Reason). This monumental decision marked the secularization of the iconic cathedral, which had long been a symbol of the Catholic faith in France. In the center of the Temple de la Raison stood a young Parisienne, representing the Goddess of Reason. The Goddess, often depicted as a personification of wisdom, was a symbol of the revolutionary ideals of reason, liberty, and equality. The young woman, dressed in a flowing white gown and holding a torch, embodied the spirit of enlightenment that was sweeping through France. This image, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, captures the historical significance of this pivotal moment in French history. The Goddess of Reason, with her serene expression and regal bearing, stands as a testament to the transformative power of the revolution. The once-sacred space of Notre Dame Cathedral now served as a temple dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and reason, reflecting the radical shifts in French society during this tumultuous period. The events of November 10, 1793, are an essential part of France's rich history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of revolutionary ideas and the capacity for change that lies within the hearts and minds of individuals.
