Himalayan Tahr Collection

The Himalayan Tahr is a species of wild goat-antelope native to the Himalayas in South Asia, and is a large mammal, with males reaching up to 1.2 meters tall and weighing up to 140 kilograms. The coat of the Himalayan Tahr is reddish-brown in color, with a dark brown stripe running down its back and sides. The horns are curved backwards and can reach up to 50 centimeters long in males. They inhabit alpine meadows and grasslands, where they feed on grasses, herbs, shrubs, lichens, mosses and other vegetation, and are social animals that live in herds of between 5-20 individuals led by an alpha male. During mating season these herds break apart into smaller groups of two or three individuals before reuniting again afterwards. The population of the Himalayan Tahr has declined due to hunting for their meat as well as habitat destruction from human activities such as logging and overgrazing by livestock; however conservation efforts have been successful in recent years leading to an increase in their numbers across their range.
