EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Princess Giovanna of Savoye, later known as Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria, is depicted in regal elegance, exuding grace and poise. Born on October 18, 1907, in Turin, Italy, Giovanna was the eldest daughter of Amadeo, Duke of Aosta, and Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. In 1930, at the age of 23, Giovanna married Boris III, Tsar of Bulgaria, in a grand ceremony held in Sofia. Boris, who had been a widower since the death of his first wife, Princess Giovana of Greece and Denmark, in 1912, was 46 years old at the time of his second marriage. The union between Giovanna and Boris was a significant one, as it strengthened the ties between Italy and Bulgaria. The couple had two children together: Crown Prince Simeon II, born in 1937, and Princess Maria-Luisa, born in 1940. This photograph captures Giovanna in her role as queen consort of Bulgaria, wearing the Order of the Cross of St. Alexander, the highest decoration in the Bulgarian Order of Chivalry. The image showcases her refined beauty, with her piercing gaze and elegant posture, as she gazes off into the distance, embodying the dignity and grace expected of a queen. The photograph was taken in 1930, just a few months after Giovanna's marriage to Boris III. It is a poignant reminder of a time when European monarchies held significant power and influence, and the lives of royals were closely followed by the public. Today, this photograph stands as a testament to the fascinating history of Giovanna, who, despite her short reign, left an indelible mark on Bulgarian history as the mother of the last Bulgarian monarch, Simeon II.
