Born in 1404, Gilles de Rais rose to prominence as the Marshal of France under King Charles VII. However, his military successes were eclipsed by his darker side, which was revealed in a series of grisly child murders. The armored figure in this print is Gilles de Rais, clad in the finest military attire of the era. However, these allegations were never proven, and Gilles was eventually arrested and tried for heresy and sodomy in 1440. He was found guilty and executed in 1440, leaving behind a dark and intriguing legacy in the annals of French history.
