This evocative image depicts the biblical story of Gideon, the fifth Judge of Israel, preparing his army for battle against the Midianite opponents. In this pivotal moment, Gideon is shown equipping his soldiers with an unconventional yet effective weapon: lamps covered with pitchers. According to the Book of Judges, the Midianites had been oppressing the people of Israel for seven long years. Desperate for deliverance, the Israelites cried out to God for help. In response, God chose Gideon as their leader. But to ensure that the Israelites' victory would be a testament to God's power, He put Gideon through a series of trials. One of these trials involved reducing the size of his army from an initial 32,000 men to just 300, who were chosen based on their drinking water from the tongue of a cow. With this select force, Gideon set out to face the Midianites. To instill fear in the hearts of his enemies, he ordered his soldiers to take pitchers, fill them with torches inside, and cover the lamps with the pitchers. This way, the light would be hidden until the exact moment of attack, adding an element of surprise and terror to the Israelites' assault.
