This evocative photograph captures a moment in history as German troops, dressed in their distinctive uniforms of the Schutztruppen (Protective Forces) in Africa, are depicted in three different theaters of their imperial campaign: South-west Africa (present-day Namibia, centre left), East Africa (present-day Tanzania, centre right), and Cameroon and Togo (centre). The Schutztruppen were established in 1886 to secure German colonial interests and protect German settlers in Africa. The uniforms of the Schutztruppen were designed for the harsh African climate, featuring khaki drill uniforms, sun helmets, and sturdy boots. Their weapons ranged from Mauser rifles to Maxim guns.
