EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a rare moment in history, as King George VI, then Prince Albert, dons a sailor suit during a naval review in 1895. The future monarch, who ascended to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII, is seen here in his role as Prince and First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy. The image, taken during the early years of his naval career, showcases his dedication and passion for the sea. Prince Albert, who would later become King George VI, was born on December 14, 1895, in Sandringham House, Norfolk. He was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. In 1911, he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who would later become Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The photograph, taken in 1895, is a testament to the prince's early interest in the navy. He joined the Royal Navy in 1911, serving as a midshipman on HMS Collingwood. During World War I, he saw active service aboard several ships, including HMS Collingwood and HMS Magnificent. The sailor suit worn by the prince in this photograph is a traditional uniform of the Royal Navy. It is a practical and functional outfit, designed for sailors working on board ships. The suit's simple design, with its short trousers, jumper, and peaked cap, reflects the utilitarian nature of naval life. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique insight into the life of a future monarch and his early naval career. It is a reminder of the rich history and traditions of the British monarchy and the Royal Navy.
