EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a young and future king, Prince Albert, Duke of York, later known as George VI, in an intimate moment with his beloved pet Spitz during the early 1910s. The image offers a rare glimpse into the personal life of the monarch-to-be, who would ascend to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Prince Albert, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, was born on December 14, 1895, at Sandringham House in Norfolk. Raised in the shadow of his older brother, he was educated at home and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, before serving in the Royal Navy during World War I. The Spitz breed, a small, fluffy dog with a distinctive fox-like face, was a popular choice among the British aristocracy during the early 20th century. In this photograph, the future king is seen cuddling and laughing with his loyal companion, a testament to their strong bond. As the years passed, Prince Albert continued to serve his country, eventually becoming the Duke of York in 1920. However, his life was forever changed when his brother abdicated in 1936, and he was called upon to assume the throne. George VI's reign, which lasted until his death in 1952, was marked by the challenges of World War II and the beginning of the decline of the British Empire. This photograph, taken decades before George VI's reign, offers a poignant reminder of the man behind the monarch, a future king who found joy and companionship in the simple pleasures of life, including the love of a faithful pet.
