This historic print depicts a pivotal moment in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748): the Battle of Dettingen on June 27, 1743. In this engagement, King George II of England (r. 1727-1760) led his forces into battle against a much larger French army, marking the last time a reigning English monarch personally commanded his troops on the battlefield. George II, dressed in full military regalia, is shown riding forward at the head of his men, inspiring courage and determination.
