In this striking photograph, taken in the early 1920s, we see King George II of the Hellenes (1890-1947) and his wife, Elisabetha of Russia (1894-1956), during their marriage. George was the eldest son of King Constantine I and Queen Sophie, and the elder brother of King Alexander. The couple married in Athens on December 21, 1921, but their union was short-lived, and they divorced in 1935. George came to the throne following his father's abdication in 1922. However, he was forced into exile in 1924 after a military coup. He returned to Greece in 1935 but was once again forced to leave when the Germans invaded in 1941. George, who had no children, remained in exile until the end of the war. Elisabetha, also known as Elisaveta or Elizaveta, was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia. She married George in a grand ceremony in Athens, attended by European royalty and dignitaries. The couple's marriage was seen as a symbol of unity between Greece and Russia. Despite the brief nature of their marriage, George and Elisabetha's relationship was significant in Greek history. Their union marked the end of the Hellenic Monarchy's first period of exile and the beginning of the second. The photograph captures a moment in time when the couple was still together, before the challenges and upheavals that would eventually lead to their separation.
