She defied societal norms by choosing to live with her partner, George Lewes, who was not her husband, and by adopting a masculine pen name. Her works, including "Silas Marner," "The Mill on the Floss," and "Middlemarch," are considered classics of realist fiction. Despite her literary success, George Eliot's personal life was marked by tragedy and loss. Her brother Isaac died by suicide when she was young, and her beloved partner, George Lewes, predeceased her.
