1731 1817 Georg Historian Weimar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Georg August von Breitenbauch (1731-1817), a renowned German historian who served the Duke of Weimar. Breitenbauch's scholarly career spanned over eight decades, making significant contributions to the fields of history and archaeology. Born in Erfurt, Breitenbauch began his academic journey at the University of Jena, where he studied theology and philosophy. However, his true passion lay in history, and he soon became a dedicated researcher and writer. In 1756, Breitenbauch entered the service of Duke Ernst August I of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, who recognized his talents and appointed him as his court historian. Breitenbauch's tenure in Weimar was marked by numerous publications, including works on the history of the House of Wettin and the history of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar. His most famous work, "Weimarische Geschichte," is a comprehensive history of the city and its rulers, published in 1786. Breitenbauch's historical research was not limited to the local area. He also conducted extensive studies on the history of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the history of the Holy Roman Empire. His work was highly regarded by his contemporaries and continued to influence historiography long after his death. This portrait, taken in 1731, captures Breitenbauch in the prime of his career. Dressed in the formal attire of the time, he gazes intently at the viewer, exuding a sense of intellectual curiosity and dedication to his craft. The portrait serves as a testament to Breitenbauch's enduring legacy as a scholar and historian in the service of the Duke of Weimar.
