EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, taken in 1910, we see two young princes of Hesse, Georg Donatus (left) and Ludwig, playing in the sand on the beach. The brothers, grandsons of Princess Alice, Duchess of Battenberg and Hesse, were the sons of Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse, and his second wife Eleonore. Princess Alice, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was a beloved member of the British royal family. Her tragic early death in 1878, just a few days after the birth of her fifth child, left her husband Prince Henry of Battenberg and their children in deep sorrow. Alice's eldest daughter, Victoria Melita, married Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse in 1894, and the couple went on to have six children, including Georg Donatus and Ludwig. The photograph captures a moment of pure joy and innocence as the young princes explore the beach and engage in playful activities in the sand. Georg Donatus, born in 1906, was the eldest son and Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse, while Ludwig, born in 1908, was the second son. The brothers grew up in the grand Ducal Palace of Darmstadt, surrounded by the rich history and traditions of their noble lineage. This image, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the carefree childhood of two young princes, who would later play important roles in the history of their family and the world. Georg Donatus, who died in 1937, was the last reigning Grand Duke of Hesse before the abolition of the monarchy in 1918. Ludwig, who died in 1968, went on to serve in the German military during World War II and later became a successful businessman. This photograph is a precious reminder of the human side of royalty, and the simple joys and experiences that unite us all, regardless of our background or station in life. The image is a valuable historical document, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Hesse family.
