Vaughn, paid their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris on August 25, 1944. The image is taken from a collection of postcard-sized photographs issued to commemorate the Liberation of Paris, which took place between August 19th and 26th, 1944. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II, stands with his back to the Tomb, his hands clasped behind him as he gazes out over the crowd. To his left, General Courtney H. H. Vaughn, the Commanding General of the First United States Army, places a wreath at the foot of the monument. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located in the Arc de Triomphe, was a symbol of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought and died for the liberation of Paris from the Nazi occupation.
