In this evocative photograph, British General Edmund Allenby (1861-1936) is seen standing atop a mound of earth, overlooking the battlefield of Wytschaete, Belgium, in the autumn of 1914. Known to British troops as "Whitesheet," this area, about a mile north of Messines, was a strategic location during the early stages of World War One. The First Battle of Ypres, which began in late October 1914, saw the Allied forces attempting to prevent the German army from advancing further into Belgium and France. Allenby, who had taken command of the 2nd Cavalry Division in August 1914, was a veteran of the Sudan Campaign and the Second Boer War. His military experience and leadership skills were soon recognized, and he was appointed to lead the 3rd Army in December 1914. In this role, he played a crucial part in the defense of Ypres and the eventual repulsion of the German offensive.
