EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern and focused expression of General Erich von Falkenhayn, Commander of the Ninth Army during the First World War. Born on February 6, 1861, in Berlin, Germany, von Falkenhayn rose through the ranks of the German military to become one of the most influential commanders of the Great War. During the early stages of the conflict, von Falkenhayn led the Ninth Army in several key battles, including the Battle of Tannenberg and the Battle of Masurian Lakes, where his strategic prowess and tactical acumen proved instrumental in securing significant victories against the Russian forces. However, von Falkenhayn's military career was not without controversy. His decision to implement a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917, which aimed to starve Britain into submission by sinking its merchant ships, ultimately failed to bring about a decisive victory and instead drew the United States into the war on the side of the Allies. Despite this setback, von Falkenhayn continued to serve the German military until the end of the war. After the armistice, he retired from the army and lived out the remainder of his life in relative obscurity. This photograph, taken during the height of von Falkenhayn's military career, offers a glimpse into the intense focus and determination of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the First World War. With his piercing gaze and military bearing, von Falkenhayn embodies the spirit of the German army during this tumultuous period in world history.
