Badge Webb War Time Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking studio portrait captures the stern yet resolute gaze of General Sir Webb Gillman, a prominent British army officer during the First World War. Dressed in his full military regalia, complete with the distinctive peaked cap adorned with the insignia of his rank, General Gillman exudes an air of authority and experience. The badge on his chest bears the emblem of the 1st Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), to which he was appointed commander in 1914. Born in 1870, Sir Webb Gillman began his military career in the late 19th century, serving in various capacities in India, South Africa, and Egypt. By the outbreak of the First World War, he had risen through the ranks to become a brigadier general. In 1915, he was promoted to major general and given command of the 3rd Division, which saw action in some of the most significant battles of the war, including the Battle of Loos and the Battle of the Somme. Sir Webb Gillman's leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in the success of these campaigns, earning him a knighthood in the 1917 New Year Honours list. He continued to serve in various roles throughout the war, ultimately retiring from the army in 1922. This image, taken between 1914 and 1918, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable soldier and leader during a time of great upheaval and sacrifice. Sir Webb Gillman's legacy as a respected and decorated military figure continues to be celebrated in British military history.
