Despite his military successes, Gough's tenure as commander was not without controversy. His aggressive tactics and refusal to heed the advice of his subordinates led to heavy losses and criticism from some quarters. Nevertheless, Gough's unwavering commitment to the war effort and his belief in the importance of maintaining morale among his troops earned him the respect of many. As the First World War drew to a close, Gough continued to serve in various capacities, eventually retiring from the military in 1922. He passed away on February 13, 1963, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most prominent British military figures of the Great War era.
