The image shows General Sir Bryan Thomas Mahon (1862-1930) decorating General Maurice-Paul-Emmanuel Sarrail (1856-1929) with the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) at Lembet Camp, Salonika Front, Macedonia on the 12th of April, 1916. Mahon, a British Army officer, served as the Commander of the 1st Division of the British Army during the Salonika Campaign. Sarrail, a French general, commanded the French Army's Eastern Army Corps. The two generals worked together in the Macedonian theatre of the First World War, and this decoration marked their close relationship and mutual respect. The KCMG is one of the most senior orders in the British honors system, and its bestowal upon Sarrail signified his exceptional service and dedication to the Allied cause in the Balkans. The ceremony took place at Lembet Camp, which served as the headquarters for the British and French forces in the region.
