This evocative photograph captures the moment of triumph and unity between General Charles de Gaulle's appointed military leader in France, General Alphonse Juin, and General Philippe Leclerc and his troops as they entered Paris on August 25, 1944. The Liberation of Paris marked the end of the German occupation during World War II, and this image encapsulates the spirit of liberation and the joy of the Parisian people. General Juin, who had taken command of the French First Army in Algiers in 1943, had led the forces that advanced on Paris from the south. General Leclerc, commanding the 2nd Armored Division, arrived from the east, and together they joined forces to liberate the city. In this photograph, General Juin is seen reviewing the troops of the 2nd Armored Division, with General Leclerc standing proudly to his right. The soldiers, many of whom were French Resistance fighters, are shown with their weapons at the ready, reflecting the intense battle that had taken place just days before.
