Longstreet, a native of Augusta, Georgia, rose through the ranks of the United States Army before resigning in 1861 to join the Confederate States Army. He became a trusted and influential commander under General Robert E. Lee, earning the nickname "Old Pompey" for his strategic prowess on the battlefield.
