EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, General J.M.B. Hertzog, a prominent figure in South African history, is seen wearing a formal suit and tie, exuding an air of authority and intelligence. Born on February 25, 1866, in the Eastern Cape Colony, Hertzog rose to prominence as a Boer general during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). After the war, he became involved in politics, joining the National Party and serving as its leader from 1912 to 1924. Hertzog's political career reached its peak when he became Prime Minister of South Africa in 1924, serving until 1939. During his tenure, he implemented policies aimed at preserving the Afrikaner identity and promoting Dutch Reformed Christianity. Hertzog's government also focused on economic development, particularly in the agriculture sector. Despite his accomplishments, Hertzog's political legacy is complex. He is remembered for his role in the establishment of apartheid, a system of institutionalized racial segregation that lasted until the late 1990s. However, it is important to note that his government did not fully embrace apartheid until after his departure from office. In this photograph, Hertzog is shown with a grey, well-groomed moustache and neatly combed hair. His collar is fastened high, and his suit is tailored to perfection. The image captures the essence of a man who was both a military leader and a shrewd politician, a man who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of South Africa in the 20th century.
