Born on October 25, 1851, Castelnau's military career began in the late 19th century, and he rose through the ranks to become a key figure in the French Army during the Great War. During World War I, Castelnau served as the commander of the 10th Army, leading his troops in several significant battles, including the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Soissons.
