EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of General Albert Leo Amade, a prominent French military figure during the tumultuous period of World War One. Born on February 12, 1856, in the picturesque town of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France, Amade rose through the ranks of the French military to become a respected and decorated general. Amade's military career began in 1876 when he joined the French Army as a second lieutenant in the 11th Infantry Regiment. Over the next several decades, he distinguished himself in various military campaigns, including the Tonkin Expedition in Indochina and the Boxer Rebellion in China. By the outbreak of World War One, Amade had reached the rank of general and was assigned to command the 10th Army Corps. During the early stages of the war, Amade played a crucial role in the defense of the Lorraine region against the invading German forces. In September 1914, he successfully repelled a German offensive at the Battle of Sarre-Union, earning himself the nickname "The Lion of Lorraine." However, his military fortunes took a turn for the worse during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, where his troops suffered heavy losses. Despite this setback, Amade continued to serve with distinction until the end of the war. After the war, Amade retired from the military and returned to private life. He died on December 15, 1941, at the age of 85. This photograph, taken during his military career, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and heroism of the men and women who fought in the Great War. The furrowed brow and steely gaze of General Amade suggest a man who knew all too well the horrors of war but remained steadfast in his duty to his country and his people.
