Boer Communication Guerilla Lines Linked P 40 Raider Traitor Elusive Maritz
EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph captures the enigmatic figure of General Christian Frederick de Wet, a legendary military leader from South African history. De Wet rose to prominence during the Boer War (1899-1902) as an elusive guerilla commander, leading raids against the British lines of communication. His tactics of hit-and-run attacks and scorched earth policies made him a formidable adversary, earning him the respect of his people and the fear of the British. The image, taken in November or December of 1914, shows General de Wet in his later years. By this time, his name had been linked to another controversial figure, General Jan Smuts' rival, General J.B.M. Hertzog, and the so-called 21 Rebellion or Maritz Rebellion against the South African government during World War One. De Wet was accused of being a traitor for his involvement in the uprising, which aimed to prevent South Africa from joining the war on the side of the Allies. Despite the allegations, De Wet's reputation as a military genius and a national hero remained unscathed. He was a complex figure, revered by some and reviled by others, whose impact on South African history is still debated. This photograph, with its intriguing backstory, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on his country's past."
