EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous encounter between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Sardinia, in October 1860, during the Italian Unification movement known as the Risorgimento. The meeting took place in Turin, Italy, and marked a significant turning point in the Italian struggle for independence. Garibaldi, a legendary military leader and revolutionary, had led the Expedition of the Thousand, a volunteer army that had successfully conquered the southern regions of Italy from the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Vittorio Emanuele II, the monarch of Sardinia, had long been a champion of Italian unification and saw the opportunity to expand his kingdom's territory. The meeting between Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II was a symbolic union of the forces that sought to unify Italy under one ruler. The king welcomed Garibaldi with open arms and granted him the title of General in the Army of the Kingdom of Sardinia. This recognition paved the way for Garibaldi's troops to join the Sardinian army and fight alongside the king's forces against the Austrians in the Third Italian War of Independence. The following year, Vittorio Emanuele II was crowned King of Italy, marking the end of the Italian unification process. This photograph is a testament to the collaboration between Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II, two key figures in the Risorgimento, and their shared commitment to creating a unified Italian state. The event is an essential part of Italian history and continues to be celebrated as a symbol of national unity and resilience.
