EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the iconic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot, in his later years on the island of Caprera off the coast of Sardinia. The image, taken in 1882, shows Garibaldi sitting on a rocky outcrop, gazing out at the Mediterranean Sea that had been the backdrop to his legendary military campaigns. Born in Nice, France, in 1807, Garibaldi is best known for his role in the Italian unification movement during the 19th century. After serving in the Brazilian army and fighting in Uruguay, he returned to Italy and led a series of military expeditions to free the Italian peninsula from foreign rule. His most famous campaign was the Expedition of the Thousand, which began in 1860 and resulted in the capture of Sicily and Naples. However, after the unification of Italy was achieved, Garibaldi was not content to retire. He continued to advocate for social and political reforms and sought to spread the ideals of Italian unity and democracy beyond the borders of the new kingdom. In 1867, he established the short-lived Roman Republic and led a failed attempt to conquer Rome. Exiled from Italy, Garibaldi and his wife, Anita, settled on the island of Caprera in 1868. He spent the remaining thirty years of his life there, writing, gardening, and continuing to inspire Italian nationalism. This photograph captures the quiet determination and unwavering commitment to his cause that defined Garibaldi's life. The island of Caprera, with its rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters, provides a fitting backdrop to this historical moment. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of one of Italy's most beloved and influential figures.
