EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in Italian history when Garibaldi's Thousand, a volunteer army led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, first set foot on Sicilian soil on May 11, 1860. The event marked the beginning of the Risorgimento, or Italian Unification movement. Garibaldi, a hero of the Italian struggle for independence, had sailed from Genoa with a small band of volunteers, determined to liberate Sicily from the rule of the Bourbon monarchy. The landing at Marsala, a small town on the western coast of Sicily, was the first significant incident in the campaign that would ultimately lead to the unification of Italy. The photograph shows the Thousand disembarking from their ships, with Garibaldi standing at the bow of one of the vessels, his arm raised in a triumphant gesture. The soldiers, dressed in red shirts and armed with rifles, are seen wading ashore, surrounded by the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Sicilian countryside stretches out behind them, dotted with vineyards and olive groves. The successful landing at Marsala marked the beginning of a series of military victories for Garibaldi and his army. They captured Palermo, the capital city of Sicily, in September of that year, and went on to conquer the entire island. In 1861, they invaded the Italian mainland, taking Naples and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the men who fought for the unification of Italy, and the significant role that Garibaldi and the Thousand played in shaping the country's history. The image captures a moment of hope and excitement, as the Italian people looked forward to a brighter future under a unified government.
