EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph captures the iconic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and military leader, as depicted in an 1851 portrait by French photographer Paul Nadar under the name of Perrin. Born on July 4, 1807, in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi became a key figure in the Italian unification movement. Garibaldi's military career began in South America, where he fought for Brazilian independence and gained a reputation as a fearless commander. He returned to Europe in the 1840s, and in 1859, he led a volunteer army, the "Thousand," to support the cause of Italian unification. Garibaldi's forces played a crucial role in the Battle of Magenta and the Battle of Solferino, which paved the way for the eventual unification of Italy under the House of Savoy. This photograph, taken in 1882, shows Garibaldi in his later years, with a stern expression and a thick beard. He is dressed in a military uniform, complete with a saber at his side and a campaign hat on his head. The photograph captures the intensity and determination that defined Garibaldi's life and his role in Italian history. Garibaldi continued to be an influential figure in Italian politics until his death in 1882. He remains a symbol of Italian patriotism and a hero to many Italians. This photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy and the indelible mark he left on Italian history." Mary Evans Picture Library/Mary Evans
