EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur and tradition of the Vielle Garde Imperiale, an elite regiment of the French army, in the early 19th century. The image features several distinguished members of the regiment, including a tambour-major (drum-bearer), general, porte-drapeau (standard-bearer), and tambour-maître (drum-master). The soldiers are dressed in their full regimental uniforms, each piece meticulously designed to reflect their rank and role within the regiment. The general, standing proudly at the center, wears a grand uniform adorned with gold braid and numerous decorations, signifying his high rank and military accomplishments. To his left, the porte-drapeau carries the regimental standard, a large flag bearing the imperial eagle and the regiment's motto, "Vive l'Empereur et la Loi" (Long Live the Emperor and the Law). To the right of the general, the tambour-major and tambour-maître are depicted with their drums and drumsticks. The tambour-major carries the regimental drum, while the tambour-maître, the drum master, holds a smaller drum used for signaling orders to the troops. The uniforms of these drummers are also intricately detailed, with red coats, white waistcoats, and black breeches. The Vielle Garde Imperiale was an elite infantry regiment of the French army, known for its discipline, courage, and distinctive uniforms. The regiment was first formed in 1814 and served until the fall of the Second French Empire in 1871. This print offers a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of this esteemed military unit, a testament to the grandeur and pageantry of the French military during the 19th century.
