EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph captures the profile of Leon Michel Gambetta, a renowned French lawyer and statesman, in the year 1882. Born on February 2, 1838, in Cahors, France, Gambetta rose to prominence during the French Third Republic, playing a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape. Gambetta's legal career began in Bordeaux, where he practiced law and became involved in local politics. However, it was his political acumen that ultimately brought him to the forefront of French politics. In 1870, he was appointed as the Minister of the Interior under the Second Empire, but he resigned after the fall of Napoleon III. Following the establishment of the Third Republic, Gambetta emerged as a leading figure. He served as the Prime Minister of France from December 1881 to January 1882, during which time he implemented a series of political and economic reforms. These included the separation of the Church and state, the establishment of universal male suffrage, and the implementation of a protective tariff policy. Despite his many accomplishments, Gambetta's tenure as Prime Minister was short-lived. He was assassinated on January 16, 1882, by an anarchist named Ravachol. The assassination shocked the nation, and Gambetta was posthumously hailed as a martyr for the Republic. This sepia CDV photograph of Gambetta, taken in 1882, offers a glimpse into the face of a man who played a significant role in shaping the political and legal landscape of France during a tumultuous period in its history. The sepia tone adds a sense of nostalgia and historical authenticity to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of French political history.
