RMS Republic, SS Florida and wireless-telegraphy room

RMS Republic sank on 24rd January 1909, near Nantucket, Massachusetts, after collision with SS Florida had occurred the day before. Republic was issued with the new Marconi wireless telegraph system and became the first ever ship to issue a CQD (Come Quickly, Danger) distress signal, when Jack Binns, the wireless-telegraph operator, transmitted the message for fourteen hours straight amidst the wreck of the wireless office. Underwater Wrecks Museum Salvaged Sherman tank

War wrecks in French waters became the property of the French Government and millions of tons of scrap iron were recovered by specialised firms. In 1970 the clearing was handed to Jaques Lemonchois and this musuem has a selection of what he found - parts of ships, tanks, torpedoes, mines etc Date: 2009
