Registar General Michael Reed looks over some of the old files at the General Register Office in Somerset House, London. Britain's Ten Per Cent Census was launched today with the delivery of letters to 1, 500, 000 households telling them they have been chosen to take part. Economic and social changes have made it necessary for the Census to break the traditional 10-year cycle, the present one only taking place five years after that of 1961. The Registrar General is joined by Master Allen Field, who was born on the last Census day, April 23rd 1961.
