Polar bear with cubs
Polar bear and cubs (Ursus maritimus). This large predator is native throughout Arctic circumpolar regions, although its range is limited by the extent of the pack ice. A male polar bear can weigh up to 600kg and measure 2.6m in length. Its diet ranges from birds to beluga whales to its more regular prey of seals. The polar bear can hunt on the land and in the water. It is known to have killed humans. Photographed in Svalbard, in the Arctic.
