On the outskirts of Coventry, at Gibbet Hill, the first buildings of the University of Warwick rose rapidly in 1964. Gibbet Hill looked out over Cryfield House Farm on October 8th, with the changing face of the countryside reflecting the progress of the new university. New structures, including the library block and science bloc, took shape, with main support columns for the six-story library under construction. Tocil Wood stood in the distance, a reminder of the past as the future of higher education unfolded before Gibbet Hill. From the center of the site, the residential buildings of Warwick University could be seen, marking the beginning of a new era in education and research.
