Dark matter distribution

Dark matter distribution. Image 3 of 4. Supercomputer simulation, known as the Millennium Run, showing the distribution of dark matter in the local universe. The frame is 63 megaparsecs (206 million light years) in distance across. Dark matter is a form of matter that cannot be detected by telescopes as it emits no radiation. It is thought that cold dark matter first formed after the Big Bang. This matter then collapsed under its own weight to form vast halos (bright yellow) which sucked in normal matter to form visible matter, such as galaxies. This simulation was created in 2005 by the Virgo Consortium of international scientists using supercomputers at the Max Planck Society, Germany. For complete sequence, see images R980/209 - R980/212

Mars

Mars. Computer artwork of the planet Mars (left), partially illuminated by the Sun (upper right). Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, the next one out after Earth, around 78 million kilometres further out at around 228 million kilometres from the Sun. It is around half the diameter of Earth, being about 6800 kilometres across. Mars is one of the rocky planets of the inner solar system. Its surface terrain is mostly cratered, though there are rift valleys and volcanic mountains. It has a thin atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide. Frozen water exists beneath the ice caps of frozen carbon dioxide in the polar regions, but Mars distance from the Sun makes it too cold for liquid water

Artwork illustrating the concept of warped space

Artwork illustrating the concept of warped space. The fabric of space is represented as a grid in which objects of increasing mass produce increas- ingly large distortions. Our Sun, at bottom left, makes almost no impression. A small, but much denser & more massive neutron star (lower centre), creates a slight distortion. The enormous gravitational pull of a black hole (bottom right) creates a yawning chasm, warping the fabric of space for light years around. The idea that space is distorted by gravity is a consequence of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The grid of space is like a thin rubber sheet on which objects of varying weight produce smaller or larger dents
