The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage is a program that recognizes and protects sites of cultural, historical, or natural significance. These sites are designated as World Heritage Sites in order to preserve them for future generations. The program was established in 1972 and has since grown to include over 1,000 sites around the world. World Heritage Sites are chosen based on their universal value to humanity. They must meet at least one of ten criteria set forth by UNESCO which include: outstanding human creative genius; places with important interchange of human values; areas with exceptional natural beauty or importance; and places that bear a unique testimony to a cultural tradition or civilization. Once selected, these sites are placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List which is maintained by the organization’s World Heritage Centre. The purpose of this list is twofold: firstly, it serves as an international record of all the world’s most significant heritage locations; secondly, it provides protection for these locations from destruction or damage due to development projects or other activities that could harm them irreparably. In addition to this protection, UNESCO also works towards preserving these sites through education campaigns and financial assistance programs aimed at helping local communities protect their heritage locations from destruction or neglect. In addition to protecting individual heritage locations around the world, UNESCO also works towards promoting international cooperation between countries in order to ensure that all people can benefit from our shared cultural heritage regardless of where they live in the world. By doing so they hope not only protect our shared past but also foster greater understanding between different cultures today and into the future.
