Cartoon, Colonel Sellers
Cartoon, Colonel Sellers. An adverse comment on a play based on a novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, The Gilded Age, satirising corruption and greed in post-Civil War America. In this imaginary courtroom scene, the man in the dock resembles the American actor John T Raymond (1836-1887), who performed in the title role. The judge in the background is John Hollingshead, at this time manager of the Gaiety Theatre. As judge, he doesn't seem to think very much of the play.
