The carnival in the port of Spain, Trinidad, 1888. People cavort in fancy dress through the street, some playing banjos, others brandishing what looks like bladders on sticks. Rather more conservatively dressed people watch from the pavement and from balconies above street level. Date: 1888

Pitch Lake - La Brea, Trinidad

The huge Pitch Lake at La Brea, Trinidad - source for the pitch used in road-covering ashphalt. The asphalt from the Lake is of economic value to Trinidad and Tobago. Some ten million tons have been mined since mining started in 1867. The refined product is used in the manufacturing and road surfacing industries

Great frigatebird, Fregata minor nicolli

Bird specimen collected by Robert Falcon Scotts British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913, also known as the Terra Nova expedition. It had a broad scientific programme and collected thousands of geological and zoological specimens. This is one of a small series of bird specimens that were collected in July 1910 when the expedition stopped at South Trinidad. Date: 1910
