Thomas Coram, a man of great compassion and vision, dedicated his life to improving the lives of abandoned children in 18th century London. Born in 1668, he navigated the bustling streets of Bloomsbury and Holborn with purpose, driven by a deep desire to make a difference. In 1746, an engraving captured the essence of these neighborhoods where Coram's mission would take root. Amongst these streets stood the Foundling Hospital, a sanctuary for countless vulnerable children. A view of this grand institution reveals its imposing presence amidst Lambs Conduit Fields. Coram himself was depicted in various forms - as Captain Coram, the visionary behind this noble project; as an oil painting capturing his determined spirit; or even through engravings that immortalized him for generations to come. One such engraving showcased Captain Thomas Coram standing proudly beside a statue erected at the Foundling Hospital. This monument symbolized not only his achievements but also served as a reminder of hope and love bestowed upon those who had been forsaken. Moses brought before Pharaoh's Daughter is another masterpiece that tells Coram's story. Painted in 1746, it depicts one of many heart-wrenching scenes he encountered during his quest to save innocent lives from abandonment and despair. Even after his passing on December 1st, 1751, Captain Thomas Coram's legacy endured. In 1796, William Nutter created an image capturing his likeness - a testament to how deeply ingrained he became within society's collective memory. Hogarth's portrait further immortalizes him while an unknown artist painted another rendition in 1830. Both images capture the determination etched onto Coram's face - evidence of unwavering commitment towards bettering society through philanthropy. The interior of the Chapel at the Foundling Hospital offers glimpses into daily life within its walls – prayers whispered by grateful children, the sound of hope echoing through its hallowed halls.
