The Third Coalition was a pivotal moment in European history, marked by significant battles and strategic meetings between powerful leaders. One of the most iconic events of this coalition was the Battle of Austerlitz on December 2, 1805. In Gerard's painting, we see the intensity and chaos that unfolded during this clash of forces. General Count Alexander Ostermann-Tolstoy played a crucial role at the Battle of Kulm on August 29, 1813. His leadership and tactical brilliance were captured in an artwork from that time by Carl Heinrich Rahl. However, General Vandamme's capture at the same battle on August 30th reminds us that victory can be fleeting and unpredictable. Napoleon Bonaparte himself recognized the significance of these battles. In "Soldiers, This Battle Must Be A Thunder Clap, " we witness his call to arms as he rallies his troops for yet another decisive engagement. But amidst all the bloodshed and conquests, there were also moments of reflection and respect. Napoleon paying homage to the courage of his vanquished foes during the Surrender of Ulm shows a glimpse into his character beyond just being a military genius. The chromolitho depiction captures vividly how intense and grandiose The Battle of Austerlitz truly was - with soldiers clashing against each other under darkened skies. Another notable event occurred during The Battle of Friedland when Russian Leib Guard charged valiantly against their enemies on June 14th, 1807. This fierce encounter is immortalized in an artwork from 1808 which showcases both bravery and sacrifice. In contrast to these violent scenes are peaceful meetings between key figures like Duke Wellington and Prince Blücher near La Belle Alliance in 1818 or Emperors Alexander I of Russia and Napoleon I at Neman River where they discussed peace terms after years-long conflicts.
