The third century was a time of great significance and cultural diversity, as depicted by the various artworks and artifacts from that era. From religious figures to sports enthusiasts, this period showcases the wide range of interests and influences. One such representation is St Anthony the Great, who is known as the patron saint of basket makers. A chromolitho image captures his essence, highlighting his devotion to his craft and spirituality. In contrast, a ceramic sculpture called Seated Ballplayer takes us back to ancient times. Dating from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century CE, it portrays an athlete engrossed in a game that has captivated people for centuries. Moving on to spiritual icons, we encounter Seated Bodhisattva Shakyamuni carved out of dark grey schist around the 3rd century AD. This statue exudes tranquility and wisdom associated with Buddhism. Sports seem to have been popular during this era as another ceramic artwork named Standing Ballplayer reveals. Created between the 1st century BC and 3rd century CE, it depicts an athlete poised for action in what might have been a competitive sport or leisurely pastime. Shifting our focus towards religion again, we find representations of several popes from antiquity: Pope Sixtus II (258), Pope Fabien (236-250), and Pope Caius (293-296). These drawings offer glimpses into their lives during turbulent times in history. Cosmetics also played a role in daily life during this period; a cosmetic palette made from schist dating back to the 2nd-3rd century AD serves as evidence. It reflects beauty standards prevalent at that time while showcasing artistic craftsmanship. Portraits were highly valued too; one such example is a marble bust believed to be Gallienus from the 3rd century AD. The intricate details capture not only physical features but also convey personality traits through art.
