Portrait of Pavel Cerenkov

Pavel Cerenkov, Russian physicist, born Voronezh Guberniya on August 10, 1904, photographed (on right) at the controls of a synchrotron at the Institute of Physics of the Soviet Academy of Science, in 1959. His important discovery in 1934 involved the velocity of high-energy subatomic particles, which is never greater than the velocity of light in a vacuum. Light travelling through water, however, moves more slowly: a high- energy particle moving through water may exceed the velocity of light in that medium. When it does it creates a "wake" of light - termed Cerenkov radiation. For this work, Cerenkov, Frank & Tamm shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in physics

Robert Cocking, first parachute death

Robert Cocking (1776-1837), amateur artist and parachute inventor. He was the first person to be killed using a parachute. In 1802, he saw the first parachute jump in England. He then developed a 32-metre wide, cone-shaped parachute, with a basket hanging beneath. The balloonists Charles Green and Edward Spencer agreed to use their balloon to test his device (see V320/118). The widely-advertised event was part of the Grand Day Fete at Vauxhall Gardens, London, on 24 July 1837. At a height of 1500 metres, in front of a large crowd, Cocking's descent began. After a few seconds, due to poor construction, the parachute turned inside out and broke up. Cocking plummeted to the ground and was killed instantly. Lithograph by L. Corbaux, from an artwork by J. B. Beech

Marquis de Condorcet, French politician

Marquis de Condorcet (1743-1794), French politician, mathematician and philosopher. Marie Jean Antoine Nicolas de Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet, worked on integrals and probability theory, and his work won him a seat in the Academy of Sciences. He wrote five volumes of biographies on famous scientists and worked on Diderot's Encyclopedie, a summary of the science and technology of the time. He became president of the French Legislative Assembly in 1792 and implemented an educational system which formed the basis of the one still in use over 200 years later. During the French Revolution he went into hiding but was discovered. He died in prison, probably by poisoning. 19th-century engraving
