St Andrews is a small town in Scotland and the home of the University of St Andrews, the oldest university in Scotland, and is located on the east coast of Fife and has a population of around 17,000 people. The town is known for its stunning beaches, historic buildings and golf courses. The University was founded in 1413 by Bishop Henry Wardlaw and has since become one of the most prestigious universities in Europe. The university offers a wide range of courses including law, medicine, science and engineering as well as humanities subjects such as history, philosophy and theology. It also boasts some impressive alumni such as Prince William who studied there from 2001-2005. The town itself is full of character with cobbled streets lined with independent shops selling everything from books to clothes to food. There are also plenty of pubs and restaurants offering traditional Scottish fare such as haggis or fish & chips. Visitors can explore St Andrews Castle which dates back to 1540 or take a stroll along West Sands beach which famously featured in Chariots Of Fire (1981). Golfers will be spoilt for choice with seven championship golf courses located around St Andrews including The Old Course which dates back to 1552 making it one of the oldest golf courses in existence today.
