Spider crabs are fascinating creatures that can be found in various parts of the world, from the Channel Islands in the UK to the Mediterranean Sea. One such species is the spiny spider crab (Maja squinado), which can be seen resting on the seabed in its natural habitat. Its spiky appearance serves as a defense mechanism against potential predators. Another type of spider crab is the great spider crab (Hyas araneus), often spotted clinging onto deadman's fingers coral (Alcyonium digitatum). These crabs have long legs and a unique body shape, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. The Leach's spider crab (Inachus phalangium) prefers to seek shelter beneath rocks or other structures to escape strong currents. This behavior helps them conserve energy and stay protected from any potential threats. Moving away from Europe, we encounter the giant crab of Japan, known for its impressive size and strength. A colorful lithograph showcases this magnificent creature, highlighting its massive claws and intricate details. Closer to home again, sponge crabs (Inachus sp) hide within anemones off the coast of Channel Islands during June. Their symbiotic relationship with these marine animals provides both protection and food sources. Seaweed-covered rocks in Malta serve as a perfect hiding spot for spiny spider crabs during May. The vibrant red algae adds a splash of color to their environment while offering camouflage against predators. Long-legged spider crabs (Macropodia rostrata) prefer Deadman's fingers coral as their perch. With elongated limbs resembling twigs or branches, they expertly blend into their surroundings while waiting for prey or evading danger. Aggregations of Maja squinado are commonly observed in shallow waters off Burton Bradstock in Dorset. These gatherings create an incredible sight as numerous individuals come together, possibly for mating purposes or simply seeking safety in numbers.
