Sphenisciformes are a group of aquatic birds, commonly known as penguins, and are found mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, with some species living in the Northern Hemisphere. Penguins have adapted to life in the water and on land, having wings that act as flippers for swimming and webbed feet for walking on land. Penguins have streamlined bodies that help them move quickly through the water and feathers that provide insulation from cold temperatures. They feed mainly on fish, squid, krill and other small marine animals. Penguins lay eggs which are incubated by both parents until they hatch into fluffy chicks. Penguins live in large colonies where they form strong social bonds with their mates and offspring. Overall, they can an iconic group of birds that have evolved to survive in harsh environments while still maintaining their unique characteristics such as tuxedo-like plumage and waddling gait on land.
