Spheniscidae is a family of aquatic, flightless birds known as penguins, and are found in the Southern Hemisphere and live primarily in cold climates near the ocean. Penguins have adapted to their environment by developing waterproof feathers, webbed feet for swimming, and a streamlined body shape for efficient movement through water. Penguins feed on fish, squid, and krill that they catch while swimming underwater. They also use their wings to help them “fly” through the water at speeds up to 15 mph. Penguins are social animals that form large colonies where they can mate and raise their young. There are 17 species of penguin living today, ranging from the tiny blue penguin to the giant emperor penguin which stands nearly 4 feet tall.
