The South Atlantic is an ocean located between Africa and South America, and is the second smallest of the world's five oceans, covering an area of about 4.5 million square miles (11.7 million square kilometers). The South Atlantic is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, and by the Southern Ocean to the south. Its eastern boundary is defined by a line that runs from Cape Agulhas in South Africa to Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. The western boundary runs along a line from Cape Horn in Chile to Bouvet Island off Antarctica. The waters of this ocean are rich with marine life, including whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and many species of fish such as tuna and marlin. There are also numerous coral reefs located throughout its depths which provide habitats for a variety of marine organisms including sponges, mollusks and crustaceans. Additionally, there are several seamounts located within its boundaries which provide important habitat for deep-sea creatures such as octopuses and squid. The climate around this region varies greatly due to its large size; however it generally has warm temperatures year round with cooler temperatures near Antarctica during winter months due to cold currents coming from that region's icy waters. Additionally strong winds often blow across this ocean creating powerful waves which can be dangerous for ships navigating through these waters or those attempting recreational activities such as surfing or sailing on them.
