During the Second World War in 1943, the RAF Bristol Beaufighter was slung with powerful weaponry as it soared through the skies, ready to defend against enemy forces. The Mariner glided gracefully over watersnakes, its sleek design allowing for a swift and stealthy approach. A WW2 Searchlight Regiment Christmas Card depicted returning troops, their weary faces filled with relief and anticipation of reuniting with loved ones. In Windsor, hunters returned from their expedition, their spoils slung across their shoulders as they proudly showcased their triumphs. The Blankney Hunt captured these moments perfectly in photographs titled "The Pride of Lincolnshire: At Home with the Blankney Hunt". One image revealed how a terrier was carried by one of the whips - slung over his shoulder in a bag - ensuring its safety during hunts. A chamois hunter skillfully maneuvered through treacherous terrain, his equipment carefully slung around him as he pursued his prey. In Vietnam, a patriotic poster displayed determined fighters with weapons slung across their bodies, symbolizing resilience and unity. Smith & Julius Advertisement showcased fashionable individuals donning stylish bags that were effortlessly slung over their shoulders. Meanwhile, an intriguing painting from c. 1900 depicted a fire-eater who fearlessly flung his victim across his pony – an astonishing display of strength and showmanship. Even Santa Claus himself embraced this trend long ago when he appeared in a chromolithograph from 1901 carrying gifts while casually slinging a Christmas tree on his back. And let us not forget David's legendary feat; armed only with a sling, he fearlessly faced Goliath and emerged victorious – forever etching this iconic moment into history. From wartime aircraft to hunting expeditions and mythical battles fought centuries ago – throughout time and various cultures – objects have been skillfully slung or carried upon shoulders to serve different purposes: protection during combat, showcasing accomplishments, or simply adding a touch of style.
