This image captures the determination and courage that characterized him throughout his military service. "Off To The Trenches, " an illustration from 1919, portrays Sir John French's commitment to duty even after the war had ended. Before becoming a field marshal, Sir John French held various positions within the army hierarchy. One such role was Major-General as depicted in a photograph from 1901. During this time period, he played a significant part in blocking General Cronje's advance at Koodoosrand Drift and crossing into Transvaal Territory with General Hutton.
